What is Myofascial Release?
And other FAQs
What is Myofascial Release?
Myofascial Release is a gentle, hands-on technique that helps your body relax and move more freely. It works by easing tension in the fascia—the soft, stretchy connective tissue that wraps around your muscles, bones, and organs. When this tissue gets tight from stress, injury, or everyday habits, it can create pain and limit your movement. Because everything in your body is connected, releasing tight spots in one area can help you feel more balanced and comfortable.
My doctor never mentioned Myofascial Release - why haven’t I heard of this before?
Myofascial Release isn’t always the first recommendation, as it’s a specialized approach—but more and more doctors are recognizing its value. I’m always happy to answer your questions or provide information you can share with your physician.
How is this different/similar to physiotherapy or massage?
It is different from a massage because with Myofascial Release you don’t use oils or lotions and do not force the tissue restrictions by pushing through them. The fascial tissue is worked manually, holding areas of tightness or restriction until the fascial tissue loosens. The holds could last five minutes or more.
What happens during a treatment?
During a treatment, you discuss with the therapist your area(s) of concern. The therapist touches the body, looking for areas of tightness, pain, or heat. Once an area is found, the therapist manually holds, compresses, or uses slight distraction on the affected area until the restricted tissue loosens.
The therapist also provides one or two techniques to be used at home for self-care, first demonstrating the technique and then walking you through it so you’re able to do it on yourself. Following the session, the therapist discusses a treatment plan for you to get the most healing and benefit from Myofascial Release therapy.
How soon will I notice relief?
You can notice relief as soon as one appointment. However, multiple appointments may be needed for long-term chronic problems such as pain.
“I was having a lot of menstrual issues. Irregularity, heavy bleeding, and major cramping. I had tried massage therapy, chiropractic, Physical Therapy, and acupuncture with no improvement.
I was hesitant to try Myofascial Release because it was different from what I was used to. However, I had a friend who was receiving Myofascial Release therapy and she really kept encouraging me to try it.
I don’t really know what I expected, maybe for it to be painful because when I had received massages, they were painful. My actual experience was pretty amazing. The therapist had me on my side doing a stretch for like ten minutes and I remember standing up and not having low back pain for the first time in 10 years.
After several Myofascial Release therapy appointments, I started having regular menstrual cycles and my cramping went away and I stopped having bloating at the beginning. I don’t have the pain and discomfort when bending, squatting, or twisting when my cycle starts anymore.”

What kind of conditions/symptoms does this treat?
Myofascial Release treats a variety of things like back pain, menstrual cramping, bladder problems, uterine/vaginal/bladder/rectal prolapse, migraines, chronic headaches, spitting up in babies, lip/tongue/cheek tie, mastitis/clogged ducts/engorgement, TMJ issues, fibromyalgia issues and more.
What if I have years of pain from multiple car accidents that nothing has helped and surgery didn’t fix?
You are unique and Myofascial Release therapy looks at you and treats you as a whole person. It’s not just a one size fits all modality, it is working with you in your entirety. It’s tailored to who you are and what you are experiencing, which is what makes it so effective at reducing pain and “[undoing] what [your] body has become to know as normal.”
“Shoulder pain after surgery didn't help with pain from a torn labrum. I had all over pain from fibromyalgia for 20+ years and was desperate for any type of pain relief. Before I found MFR I had tried so many different medications, psychical therapies, massage, holistic creams to no avail.
It has been a long journey to "un-do" what my body has become to know as normal. My overall pain has decreased and though it returns, being worked on brings pain relief quicker. My flare ups have decreased and I am able to perform normal daily activities with less pain.
I had no reservations about trying this therapy as nothing I had tried was bringing relief. It wasn't what I had expected, however after being educated on how the process of MFR works on the body things really made sense.”
